it’s official. the long wait is over. i can stop pacing back-and-forth and foaming at the mouth. round 1 of the 2008 motogp season commenced today (est) at the illuminated losail international circuit in doha, qatar.
a week prior, the teams had 3 days to test and adapt to the new and unfamiliar conditions. in general, the riders were positive with the lighting. only dani pedrosa (repsol honda) complained saying that it fatigued his eyes (boo hoo :'[ ). we should see some old school orange or yellow-tinted lens on the helmet which enhance contrast and brightness in low light (or we could these specially developed glasses from tag heuer).
rookie jorge lorenzo (fiat yamaha) unbelievably set the fastest lap of the test with 3 of the top 4 spots occupied by yamahas. my boy rdp was 3rd fastest with world champ casey stoner (marlboro ducati) uncharacteristically lagging in 5th. conditions were less than ideal with temps cool and wind kicking up sand. grip will be an issue as always but more than usual this race.
i may have been a bit too harsh in my last post on this subject. i’ve warmed up after seeing the brilliant photos and the fact that the racers were treading in uncharted territory.
the bikes look great under the lights. fairings glisten like they were just painted and still wet. sparks and exhaust flames remind me of chaff and afterburners.
zero hour has come and gone leaving us with HERO hour. let’s see which rider can tame these unruly camels and tackle the desert tarmac.
